🚨 I Let a Scammer Access My Computer — What Do I Do Now?
If you received a phone call claiming to be from Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, your bank, or your internet provider, and you allowed them to access your computer — you are not alone, and help is available.
The most important thing right now is to act quickly to limit damage and protect your personal information.
✅ Step 1: Disconnect the Computer Immediately
If the computer is still on:
- Disconnect it from the internet
- Unplug the Ethernet cable or
- Turn off Wi-Fi
- Do NOT shut it down yet unless instructed by a professional
This helps stop any further remote activity.
🚫 Step 2: Do NOT Try to “Fix It Yourself”
Avoid:
- Running random antivirus tools
- Deleting programs you don’t recognize
- Resetting passwords from the affected computer
- Allowing the scammer to reconnect “to fix the problem”
These steps can make forensic cleanup harder or allow the attacker to regain access.
🔐 Step 3: Assume Passwords Are Compromised
If the scammer had access, they may have:
- Installed remote access software
- Captured saved passwords
- Accessed email, banking, or tax documents
From a different, safe device:
- Change passwords for:
- Email accounts
- Banking and financial accounts
- Social media
- Any account used on the infected computer
- Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever possible
💳 Step 4: Contact Your Bank & Credit Card Companies
If you entered any financial information or the scammer had access to saved browsers or documents:
- Call your bank and credit card providers
- Alert them to potential fraud
- Monitor transactions closely
- Consider placing a fraud alert or credit freeze with the credit bureaus
🛠️ Step 5: Have the Computer Professionally Cleaned
Phone scam infections are not always obvious. Many leave behind:
- Hidden remote access tools
- Persistence mechanisms
- Backdoors that survive reboots
- Malware designed to avoid antivirus detection
At Bethel IT Services, we:
- Remove all remote access tools
- Scan for hidden malware
- Verify system integrity
- Determine whether a clean reinstall is the safest option
- Help recover and secure your data
⚠️ In some cases, the only safe solution is a full system wipe and reinstall. We will explain your options clearly before doing anything.
